"Dawson's Creek" star Busy Philipps is mourning the loss of her friend and costar James Van Der Beek.
Several celebrity tributes are pouring in for the actor and Millennial icon after Van Der Beek's death was announced on his official Instagram page on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Van Der Beek, who was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023, died at age 48 on Wednesday morning.
While an exact cause of death was not disclosed, the post noted that Van Der Beek "passed peacefully."
In an emotional Instagram post, Philipps wrote that her "heart is deeply hurting for all of us today."
"Every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him, all of his dear friends and community that surrounded him as he battled this illness," Philipps continued. "But I am profoundly heartbroken for his incredible wife Kimberly and their six magical children."

Philipps played Audrey Liddell opposite Van Der Beek's Dawson Leery on the seminal teen drama, which ran from 1998-2003.
"James Van Der Beek was one in a billion, and he will be forever missed and I don't know what else to say," Philipps concluded. "I am just so, so sad. He was my friend, and I loved him and I’m so grateful for our friendship all these years."
