Emma Heming Willis opened up about celebrating her 50th birthday while navigating her husband Bruce Willis’s ongoing health battle.

“I really was looking forward to 50 because my 40s felt like a little bit of a doozy,” she said.

Heming Willis added, “I always go back to: What would my husband want for me? He would want me to have a big fun bash.”

Emma Heming Willis turned 50 on June 18, and she’s getting candid about reaching the milestone while navigating her husband Bruce Willis’s ongoing health battle.

“I really was looking forward to 50 because my 40s felt like a little bit of a doozy. And I was just ready to embrace my 50s,” she said on the August 5 episode of Hoda Kotb’s podcast “Making Space.”

As the caregiver for her husband, 71, who is living with frontotemporal dementia, Heming Willis admitted she wasn’t in “the celebratory feelings of late” leading up to her birthday and wasn’t sure if she wanted to celebrate at all. But a friend changed her mind.

“I had a friend of mine who kept sort of pushing and saying, ‘You don’t want to miss out on your 50. You have to celebrate in some form or fashion,’” she said. “I really sat with that, and I thought, ‘You know what? I don’t want to look back and think, ‘Why didn’t I celebrate 50?’ It is something to celebrate.”

She ultimately opted for a small gathering at home.

“My mom and some friends put together this really lovely party at the house,” she said. “I said, ‘I want to eat tacos, and I want to have a margarita, and I want to be with my friends. And that was it.”

Elsewhere in the podcast interview, Heming Willis said she continues to struggle with the “guilt” of celebrating joyful moments while dealing with her husband’s illness. The couple got married in 2009, and share two daughters: Mabel Ray and Evelyn Penn.

“I always wrestle with it,” she said. “I think guilt is something that I am always carrying. But I’ve learned that it is really not helpful. I always go back to: What would my husband want for me? He would want me to have a big fun bash.”

She continued, “He would want me to celebrate my life with my friends and family. That is what I always think about when guilt of any sort comes in front of me. And I’m really happy that I did.”
