Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille — better known as Captain & Tennille — were married on November 11, 1974, and had their first big hit the next year with “Love Will Keep Us Together.” But while it would make sense to assume that the song's lyrics were inspired by the couple's real-life romance, they didn't actually write the chart-topper.
"Love Will Keep Us Together" was a cover of a Neil Sedaka song which appeared on his 1974 compilation album Sedaka's Back (but wasn't released as a single). Captain & Tennille's version, which was the title track on their debut album, went straight to the top of the charts upon its release in 1975, hitting #1 on both the Billboard Easy Listening and pop charts and landing the top spot on the year-end chart.
Not only was the song the best-selling single of 1975, but it also won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, according to Billboard, and kicked off a memorable run of top five hits including “The Way I Want to Touch You," “Lonely Nights (Angel Face)” (also written by Sedaka), and “Shop Around." Captain & Tennille even ended up getting their own TV variety show.
Pretty impressive for a song Tennille apparently nailed in one take.

"I'm a one take person," the singer explained in an interview with Gary James in the late '90s.
"I'll get it within one or two takes," she continued. "There's a school of thought about recording that came from Karen and Richard Carpenter, and Richard Carpenter in particular as a producer. And this is a valid school of thought. Richard would have Karen sing over and over again and he would punch in until he got exactly the way he wanted it — one word, or one note. Consequently, all of their recordings are perfection...absolute perfection. You cannot hear a flaw anywhere. But my philosophy is I want the performance. I want it to be all of one, all in one. I don't care if there's a little glitch here or a little attack of a note that's not quite perfect. If the emotion is there, if the feeling is there, that's what I go for."
"Now both are equally valid," Tennille added. "It's just a style that you choose. Daryl has always understood that I'm a performance person. When I go out to do a concert, I don't get to do two or three takes. I go out there and that's it. I believe a recording should be the same. That's just my philosophy."
Unfortunately, while love kept Dragon and Tennille together as a couple for four decades, they did end up getting a divorce in 2014. Their biggest hit is still going strong, however; at the time of this writing, "Love Will Keep Us Together" has been streamed 125,827,049 times on Spotify.
