Jacob Elordi nearly wasn’t even in Frankenstein. Now he’s up for his first Academy Award thanks to the Netflix film. Following a busy awards season that included stops at the Golden Globes and the SAG Actor Awards, Elordi arrived at the Dolby Theater on Sunday dressed in Bottega Veneta and Cartier jewelry. He also brought his mother, Melissa, as his plus one.

Elordi is nominated for his performance as the Creature in the 2025 adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Gothic horror novel. Andrew Garfield dropped out of the project before shooting began in early 2024, citing scheduling conflicts. After a Zoom call audition with director Guillermo del Toro, Elordi was the new lead opposite Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein.

“Jacob’s eyes are so full of humanity. I cast him because of his eyes,” Del Toro told Variety. Isaac told the magazine that Del Toro called him right after Elordi’s audition and said he found their new Creature, recalling that the director told him, “‘The creature could be Jesus. But with Jacob, it’s Adam. He’s the first human, and it has that innocence.’”

Elordi went through an intense physical transformation involving upwards of 10 hours of makeup daily to become the Creature. “The Creature’s so grounded. You have to make the Creature real,” Mike Hill, the film’s head of prosthetic makeup effects, told Deadline in October. “If you make him too fantastic, then it goes out of the movie. So, the fantastic side of him is that we know he’s been patched together from the dead and brought back to life. We know he’s stitched up in areas and pieced together; that speaks for itself. So, you don’t need any glitz and glamour or CGI to help that along. It has to stay grounded.”

The Saltburn actor has a busy year ahead of him, even after the whirlwind press tour for Emerald Fennel’s adaptation on another classic 19th century novel, Wuthering Heights, in which Elordi plays the brooding Heathcliff. The long-awaited third season of Euphoria will premiere this April on HBO. Elordi is also slated to star in Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars, adapted from the Peter Heller book and co-starring Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin.
