Michael Douglas revealed that he had an affair with Kathleen Turner while shooting Romancing the Stone.
Turner responded to Douglas’ revelation in a statement to PEOPLE.
The two actors went on to star in three more projects together.
Kathleen Turner is breaking her silence on the new revelations about her relationship with Michael Douglas.
The Wall Street star revealed that he had a secret affair with the Peggy Sue Got Married actress while they were filming 1984’s Romancing the Stone in his upcoming memoir One Helluva Ride. Now, Turner is speaking out.
“Good heavens what a fuss about something 40 years ago!” the actress told PEOPLE in a statement. “I love Michael and I look forward to enjoying the book.”
In an excerpt from One Helluva Ride published in PEOPLE, Douglas detailed his fling with his costar. “Kathleen was smart, funny, and sexy with a deep, sultry voice that became her signature,” he wrote, noting that “things at home were in a bad place” with then-wife Diandra Douglas and explaining that they were “both having extramarital affairs” at the time.

Douglas said that he was “still technically married, but separated” from Diandra when he went to Mexico to film Romancing the Stone.
The Falling Down actor went on to star with Turner in the Romancing the Stone sequel The Jewel of the Nile as well as The War of the Roses, and said that their onscreen “chemistry” was “so strong” that “audiences have been certain for years that we were in a relationship together while making” their first film together.
Douglas wrote that both actors “denied it” throughout multiple press tours. “The official story went as follows: Yes, we confessed, we had amazing chemistry. Yes, we were both, as Kathleen said, ‘terrible flirts,’ and yes, we were both tempted, but nothing ever happened between us.”

He then revealed, “That was a lie. It was a lie meant to protect my wife and son, a lie we told the world for 40 years.”
Douglas continued, “The truth is that during the production of Romancing the Stone, Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship. It wasn’t a fly-by night affair; it grew naturally from how closely we were working together, how much pressure we were under, how much we respected and cared for one another, and how attracted we were to each other. Like every other guy in the world at the time, I was knocked sideways by Kathleen....”

The Basic Instinct star said that he would “sneak into her hotel room after everybody was asleep,” and that “Kathleen and I were keeping the chemistry alive” as the characters fell in love. He also said that their “hidden” relationship went undetected by director Robert Zemeckis and costar Danny DeVito.
However, the relationship was put on ice when Douglas’ wife visited production. “Diandra grew suspicious. A woman’s intuition, I suppose,” he wrote. “At some point, she was alone with Kathleen and made it clear to her that we were still married. Her view of the terms of our separation was different from mine. This gave Kathleen pause. She didn’t want to interfere.”

Douglas then returned to Diandra, but they ultimately divorced in 1995, and he married Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000. He remained friendly with Turner on The Jewel of the Nile and War of the Roses, and the two actors eventually reunited again on season 3 of The Kominsky Method in 2021.
