A man was seriously injured, reportedly suffering two leg fractures, on a Batman-themed roller coaster in Spain.
The 49-year-old parkgoer was injured after experiencing what The Sun reported as an “emergency” while riding the Batman Gotham City Escape at Parque Warner Madrid on Saturday, Aug. 29, per the British newspaper.
A spokesperson for the Spanish theme park later confirmed to PEOPLE that an “incident” requiring “emergency procedures” occurred on the ride on Saturday.
According to The Sun, emergency responders treated the unidentified man on the scene before he was airlifted by helicopter to the hospital following the emergency at the park, which is located just outside Madrid in San Martín de la Vega.
The man sustained two leg injuries — an open fracture to his left leg and a closed fracture to his right leg — and was transported to 12 de Octubre University Hospital in Madrid, the outlet reported.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, a Parque Warner Madrid spokesperson said, “Today, an incident occurred at Batman Gotham City Escape, an attraction at Parque Warner. The ride was stopped immediately, and our emergency procedures were activated. The affected guest received immediate assistance from the emergency response teams.”
“The roller coaster remains closed while the incident is being reviewed in coordination with the relevant authorities,” the spokesperson said.

The roller coaster was halted immediately after the incident, and vehicles belonging to local police and Spain’s Civil Guard were subsequently spotted on the scene, per The Sun. The rest of the Warner Bros. theme park continued operations, according to the outlet.
The aftermath of the emergency was chaotic, The Sun reported, citing eyewitnesses. Park visitors were “deeply shaken” and “completely shocked” in the wake of the incident, 21-year-old Noelia Hans told the outlet.

Batman Gotham City Escape, part of Parque Warner Madrid’s DC Super Heroes World, first opened in 2023.
Billed as an immersive ride following an “action-packed story between Batman and The Joker,” the ride reaches a maximum height of 45 meters, or just under 148 feet, and a maximum speed of 104 kilometers an hour, or just under 65 miles an hour, according to the park’s website.
The 111-second attraction also has four “inversions that will leave you hanging upside down,” the park’s website says.
