Green Day has been rocking out for nearly 30 years — and now, they have their children by their sides.
Singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt co-created the band in 1987, completing their lineup with the addition of drummer Tré Cool in 1990. Their major-label debut, Dookie, was released in 1994 — the same year Armstrong learned he was going to become a father for the first time.
“[I] went into the other room [to check the test]. Sure enough, we had the big purple line,” Armstrong recalled to Rolling Stone in January 1995 of learning his wife, Adrienne Armstrong, was expecting. "We just got married and find out the next day she was pregnant. What a high.”
Armstrong’s older son Joey was born in February 1995, followed by Jakob in September 1998. Touring quickly became a family affair, with the first of Cool’s three kids coming in 1995. Dirnt welcomed his first child one year later in 1996.
Now, the band members' kids are around to see them play the opening ceremony of Super Bowl LX. Here’s everything to know about the kids of Green Day.

Armstrong and Adrienne became parents for the first time when their older son, Joseph Marciano “Joey” Armstrong, was born on Feb. 28, 1995. They completed the family with the birth of their younger son, Jakob Danger Armstrong, on Sept. 12, 1998.
The kids began joining Armstrong on tour at a young age. In 2024, Jakob shared a throwback photo holding his dad’s guitar and gave some insight into his life at the time. “Me in 2001 on the Warning tour,” he wrote. “I was about 3 years old I think. I remember that polar bear shirt well.”
The boys learned to play instruments while growing up, and eventually, they both joined bands of their own.
For Joey, going into music was “a no-brainer,” he told Jon Foss in August 2019. Meanwhile, Jakob enrolled in college for a year, but quickly realized he "did not enjoy it." He went on to play in the band Ultra Q.
“I had already graduated high school and I’d been playing with the guys in my band for a long time,” he told Guitar World in October 2023. “I missed playing music so much.”
Meanwhile, Joey was a member of the band SWMRS until leaving in 2022 “to grow [his] personal life,” the band told NME. Around that time, Joey was also accused of sexual misconduct by his ex-girlfriend Lydia Night, who is the lead singer of The Regrettes, in a since-deleted post on Instagram.
In a subsequent statement, Joey said he doesn't "agree with some of the things she said about me," but added that he apologized to Night for his “mistakes” and that "it’s important that she be allowed to say them and that she be supported for speaking out. I respect her immensely and fully accept that I failed her as a partner."

Cool, who was born Frank Edwin Wright III, became a dad for the first time the same year as Armstrong. He welcomed his oldest child, daughter Ramona Isabel Wright, on Jan. 12, 1995, with ex-wife Lisea Lyons.
Cool and ex-wife Claudia Suarez expanded their family with the birth of their son, Frank "Frankie" Edwin Wright IV, on Feb. 11, 2001. On Dec. 28, 2018, Cool welcomed his younger son, Mickey Otis Wright, with wife Sara Rose Wright.
In May 2009, Cool opened up about how becoming a dad changed his approach to his own family.
“We had to break free [as teenagers/young adults]. But that changes as you get older and especially when you start having children,” he told Rolling Stone. “We’re a family. We gotta reconnect, get close together. I’ve been working on my relationship with my parents and my sister over the years. We have become more close. I think having kids makes you want to keep the gang together.”
Cool’s also made efforts to stay close with his older kids as they grow up. In January 2020, he posted a sweet carousel of photos of Ramona, including pictures of her with her diploma, her own partner and child. “Happy Birthday Ramona Wright! 25 years old today, wow!!!” he wrote. “I love you so much and am so proud of you and stoked to be your Dad!”
In December 2022, Cool’s older son, Frankie, posted some fun photos celebrating his dad’s milestone birthday, writing, “Gotta give a Happy birthday shoutout to my pops. 50 is a big number.”
Frankie has also followed his father's footsteps in the music industry: He works as a music artist and guitarist under the name Frankadelic, per his Instagram.
Mickey has also shown an interest in music and follows his dad on tour all over the world. Cool took a break to do some drumming with his youngest during his Milan stop in 2023.
“Backstage warming up with my favorite drum teacher,” Cool wrote on Instagram. “Thank you Milan for a fantastic evening. I will never forget this concert.”

Dirnt became a father just one year after Armstrong and Cool when he welcomed his oldest child, daughter Estelle, on Dec. 20, 1996, with his first wife, Anastasia Serman.
“I was blessed with a daughter who challenged me to be the best father/friend I can be,” he shared on her 20th birthday on Instagram. “She taught me about unconditional love, friendship, and so much more.”
Dirnt’s family grew in 2008, when he welcomed son Brixton Michael Dirnt with his now-wife Brittney Cade on Oct. 11 of that year. Their family was completed with the birth of his younger daughter Ryan Ruby Dirnt on Nov. 29, 2010.
In October 2017, Dirnt told Ticket Corner that he was the “happiest” he’s ever been, thanks, in part, to his kids. “I have a great family, and my band is still firing on all cylinders,” he said at the time, adding that his kids have both “kept [him] young” and “made [him] mature earlier.”
Dirnt gave his kids a touching shout-out when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Bass Magazine Awards in January 2026. “My kids — Estelle, Brixton, Ryan — I love you guys,” he said in his speech. “Dad’s always gone, so I want to thank you for sharing me with the rest of the world.”
“I know it wasn’t your choice,” he concluded. “But you do it, you take it with grace, and you keep me humble when I’m at home and I thank you for that.”
