English actress Mia McKenna-Bruce returned to the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday evening as a presenter. Fresh off her star turn in Netflix’s Agatha Christie and the Seven Dials, McKenna-Bruce looked lovely in a floor-length evening gown with a shimmering, sequined texture and a cascading metallic embellishment while arriving at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

McKenna-Bruce won the BAFTA Rising Star award in 2024 for her performance in How to Have Sex, a coming-of-age drama about female adolescence, consent, and peer pressure. Other nominees that year included fellow nominees Phoebe Dynevor, Ayo Edebiri, Jacob Elordi, and Sophie Wilde. The Rising Star award is the only BAFTA category voted for by the public. “A lot of what we wanted to do with the film is show that the pressure was coming from everywhere,” McKenna-Bruce said in 2024. “Everyone’s got a role to play in this. “The main takeaway is just to be a kind person and realize the impact that your actions have on others. Like, it’s huge. It can stay with people for life and it can change the course of someone’s life.”

McKenna-Bruce was actually in the middle of the Molly Manning Walker-directed film when she auditioned for Agatha Christie and the Seven Dials. In the miniseries adaptation of the murder mystery novel, McKenna-Bruce plays Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent, a spirited young woman who turns into a gumshoe detective when someone close to her turns up dead.

“I really love her heart and ability to connect with people,” McKenna-Bruce told Town & Country. “It’s why I love acting, because I love people. My favorite thing is to sit and people watch. I just find humans fascinating. Bundle has a really glorious way of, even though she’s really strong in her pursuit [of the truth], she’s never putting other people down. She’s always encouraging people to be a part of it with her. That’s something that I’d love to hold onto going forward—just holding onto that love of people and wanting to bring people on journeys with me.”

Up next for McKenna-Bruce is BritBox’s The Lady, a true crime story and romp through 1980s British society. She’ll play Jane Andrews, a personal dresser for the then-Duchess of York who was later charged with the murder of her boyfriend.
