Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim co-directed the new documentary You Can See Everything, in which Elizabeth Holmes and her partner Billy Evans invited the filmmakers into their home

Fielder said in a recent Q&A that he is “not sure to this day what I experienced”

Conversations with Holmes and Evans did not yield direct answers, as the filmmaker-comedian recalled: “What are they thinking about this situation?”

Nathan Fielder is still uncertain about Elizabeth Holmes.

While filming his new A24 documentary You Can See Everything (in theaters now), Fielder recalled during an Oct. 6 post-screening Q&A at Los Angeles’ Academy Museum, he remained in constant confusion about the claims Holmes, its subject, was making.

“I still am not sure to this day what I experienced,” said Fielder, 42, alongside his co-director Lance Oppenheim in conversation with Bill Hader.

You Can See Everything includes footage from the 34 days before Holmes, 42, began her prison sentence on May 30, 2023. The disgraced Theranos founder and her partner Billy Evans welcomed Fielder, Oppenheim and a small film crew into their California home up until the moment she reported to the federal prison in Bryan, Texas, where she is currently serving her time. The couple, who have been engaged since 2018, share two children.

“One of the reasons I’m excited for it to come out and more people see it,” explained Fielder, was that the team behind You Can See Everything “was just a small group for so long. And I actually think maybe it being out there, everyone can help me understand what I went through a little bit. Or what we all went through.”

A fundamental question Fielder had about Holmes and Evans, 33, participating willingly in the documentary remains unanswered, said the comedian. “We were like, ‘Why do they want us here?’ … There was never a great explanation as to why, why you would want to spend your last month of freedom in a decade with this guy. Why?”

He added with a laugh, “Even with no cameras.... I like to see myself as a nice person overall, but still I wouldn’t choose me.”

You Can See Everything includes Fielder’s on-camera conversations with both Holmes and Evans that seemingly go in circles. The Nathan for You creator said that he and the team “constantly” debated the meanings of the recorded interviews.

“We still try to get into their heads of — what are they thinking about this situation?” recalled Fielder. “And I think when you have a feeling of you experience something and you understand it, and then you start talking to others that have experienced the same thing and they experience something different — I know for me at least, I’m like, ‘Maybe I’m not seeing this properly.’ And that can really mess with your head.”

Holmes founded Theranos, a billion-dollar tech start-up, in 2003. The company promised to revolutionize the health care industry with cheap diagnostic testing and devices able to screen patients for hundreds of diseases with just a few drops of blood. However, the technology didn’t work.

The former Silicon Valley entrepreneur was ultimately convicted for multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy. Her 11-year sentence was reduced to nine years for good behavior. She has maintained her innocence amid the fallout.

Holmes’ story was adapted into multiple projects, including Hulu’s award-winning 2022 miniseries The Dropout starring Amanda Seyfried.
