CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — There is no evidence of an attacker at the University of Virginia after a gunman was reported near a library on campus, according to an emergency alert from campus police.

"No evidence at this time of an attack, investigation is ongoing," Brian Coy, a spokesperson for the university, said in a statement to USA TODAY.

The school sent out an emergency alert warning students an "active attacker" with a gun was reported near Shannon Library on Nov. 3 and directing them to "run-hide-fight."

Coy told USA TODAY students are still being told to be vigilant "out of an abundance of caution until the investigation is complete. It’s still an active investigation."

Police were on scene at Shannon Library and continuing to investigate. Sirens could be heard in the southern part of the campus just a few minutes after 3 p.m. ET as the emergency messages were sent out to students.

The Charlottesville, Virginia, police and fire departments are assisting campus police in their investigation, according to Kyle Ervin, a spokesperson for the city of Charlottesville.

The incident comes nearly three years after three University of Virginia football players were fatally shot and two other students were wounded on campus.
