Lucy Hale, who is famously known for her character in the hit series Pretty Little Liars, opened up about one of the darkest chapters of her life.

The actress has been candid about her struggle with alcohol abuse and how she managed to break the cycle.

Four years after her life-changing decision, the 36-year-old is celebrating her sobriety milestone, reflecting on how hitting “rock bottom” ultimately became a turning point in her life.

In an Instagram post, Hale marks a personal achievement that she holds close to her heart: her journey to sobriety.

The heartfelt post also reflects how the journey wasn’t easy, but she managed to stay strong and committed to her goal.

“4 years ago, I reached a very dark chapter and my personal rock bottom. It’s wild to say, but that ended up being the greatest gift and biggest turning point in my life. The path hasn’t always been smooth. There’s been pain, discomfort, loneliness and deep self-confrontation. But sobriety handed me back my life. I am deeply grateful for every single moment that has brought me to this point,” she wrote.

In addition, she also sent words of encouragement and hope to her followers who were also dealing with the same issue as her.

“If you’re struggling, please know this: there is always a chance to begin again. Keep going. Keep speaking your truth. Ask for help. And remember that you are so worthy of a life you’re proud of. Your existence matters and so does the story you carry. It DOES get better. I’ve realized that darkness isn’t always something to fear. It’s often the very thing that leads us toward the light,” the actress concluded her message.

As for fans, the comment section lit up with admiration as they celebrated Hale’s journey.

“Congrats, Lucy! So proud of you,” a fan noted.

In 2024, the actress admitted being proud now she can talk about the things that used to bring her “so much shame.”

As she recalled her alcohol addiction, she spoke about how it all began and the effects of it.

“Since a very young age, I always felt alone and misunderstood. So as a teenager, I found alcohol, which of course shut my brain off," she shared as cited by PEOPLE, adding, "And it worked for me for a while, until it turned really dark.”

According to her, she spent most of her 20s battling her demons and, despite a strong “desire to change,” she sometimes felt “powerless to the obsession.”

Moreover, she also described the hit series Pretty Little Liars as her North Star, a guiding light that saved her from losing herself entirely.

“If I'm perfectly honest, without my career and without that creative outlet, I don't know if I would've made it,” she admitted. “I think that show and my love of what I do was my North Star truly; it really gave me purpose and still gives me purpose.”

Unfortunately, she was repeatedly experiencing intense emotional pain and mental strain, which led to alcohol use.
