Whether he's wandering around California with his wife, Meghan Markle, maintaining appearances as the pair pursue their American lifestyle or returning to London to face a legal setback, Prince Harry is becoming an increasingly pitiable figure with each passing week. The most recent drama has involved an undignified dispute over whether he could lodge at Buckingham Palace.
King Charles's representatives confirmed that the Duke of Sussex would not be accommodated at the Palace, despite his team having just revealed Harry had accepted an invitation to stay there. There has also been a significant controversy over whether he is entitled to taxpayer-funded security.
A spokesperson for Harry said the decision of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures not to provide security for his family meant the duke had spent the previous week making "alternative security arrangements".

Only when these were in place was he able to make arrangements for the visit, they added.
If he was a full-time working royal things would be very different. But he's not.

And Harry has audacity to expect the British authorities to say "yes, sir, right away, sir" after launching attacks at his own family from across the Atlantic since departing the Firm in January 2020.
The rebellious prince appears to believe that he still has the authority to arrive and issue demands to them.
But he simply cannot expect to receive all the privileges, deference and admiration that accompany being a member of the Firm if he is not. Furthermore, he hasn't considered how this recent controversy is affecting his father.
It was reasonable that the two would want to meet, ideally to improve their relationship, and Charles appeared eager to ensure Harry felt at ease during his visit.

Another reasonable wish.
However, plainly stated, the monarch's younger son needs to assess the situation.
The Palace undoubtedly hoped his visit would proceed smoothly - a quick arrival and departure.
Harry ensured this wasn't the outcome by creating a significant commotion and releasing a complaining statement following his defeat in his privacy lawsuit, describing the entire matter as a "complete and obvious whitewash".
Both sides presented their cases at the High Court, and Mr Justice Nicklin rendered his verdict at the conclusion.
Harry evidently didn't pause to consider before releasing his statement containing such a startling accusation, given that the judicial system in this nation technically operates under the King's authority.
Publishing such a statement is sufficiently humiliating for Charles. However, had it been released while Harry was residing at Charles's residence, that degree of humiliation would have been astronomical.
Rescinding the invitation appeared severe.
Yet in retrospect, it was an exceptionally calculated decision.
