See ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Stars React to Their First Scenes

With production on Grey’s Anatomy Season 23 well underway, the returning cast of the series is hard at work playing our favorite fictional surgeons.
However, several of the show’s stars still found time to look back to the beginning, when they first stepped foot into their scrubs and the hospital.
In a series of videos shared on ABC’s official Grey’s Anatomy social media pages, several stars were captured rewatching their first scenes in character.
It started with Chandra Wilson, who proved she still remembers her iconic “five rules” speech from the series pilot, as she mouthed along with Miranda Bailey.
“Oh, babies,” Wilson also said, wistfully, as the scene panned to the then-interns, most of whom have since left the show.
After reviewing the clip, Wilson said, “Bailey today still thinks that that’s who she is. You all know different. You all have seen her underbelly, but she thinks that that’s who she is. And it’s very helpful to me as an actor because whenever I get confused about, ‘What would Bailey be doing in this scene? What would she be thinking?’ I think about this episode, and it’s my North star.”

Niko Terho was next up to relive the introduction of his Lucas Adams and admitted, “This is trippy to see.”
While watching Lucas hit the locker room alongside the other new interns in his class, he noted, “Everybody looks so young here. Like we’re all just trying to figure it all out. This is so cool.”
“Honestly?” Terho continued, “I feel like Lucas has definitely gotten more confident and more comfortable around the others for sure. He feels like an outsider here.” Still, the actor concluded, “I think he’s pretty much the same guy underneath everything. He’s just more confident and less worried about what other people are thinking.”
Caterina Scorsone was the third actor to trek down memory lane for the video series and joked she was “going back to the Jurassic Period” — or, more specifically, Season 7 — to do so.
“Amelia is looking wayward and ungovernable, and then there’s beautiful, shiny Eric [Dane], looking sparkly. Aw, and she grew up with him because he was around all the time when they were kids. And now she’s like older and hot and horny. Oh! And this was when we were still shooting on film, so we all looked glossy,” Scorsone said of the scene.

“What I remember mostly was trying to balance on those shoes,” she said with a laugh after the clip was complete. “That was the era when Amelia was wearing a lot of platform heels and crop tops.”
Alexis Floyd also took part in the game, revisiting the introduction of Simone Griffith. Floyd described it as “time traveling,” and remembered, “I remember running into the lobby and seeing that Grey Sloan Memorial emblem on the floor and being like, ‘Oh, I really am on this TV show.'”
“I also remember meeting [James Pickens Jr.] for the first time, my fellow Cleveland-er, so this was our first scene together and a very special full-circle moment,” she continued.
After seeing her fellow costars walking in for their own introductions, she said with a grin, “Aw, look! Everybody’s coming out! Who knew I’d just met my family.”
Adelaide Kane was next, picking up with Jules Millin’s first moment in the show.
“That bag was stuffed with old towels,” she explained of her bulging pocketbook.
She then noted that it was her first time working with Chris Carmack, who just so happened to be seated next to her on set during the review. She later noted how funny it was to be revisiting the scene again while they were working together on Season 23, since their once-hook-up was “never mentioned again.”
When she then saw Midori Francis as Mike Yasuda, she said, “Aw, Midori!”
After reviewing the clip, Kane then shared a bit of behind-the-scenes intel, saying, “First of all, I hated that dress I was wearing so much. With a deep and abiding passion, I hated that dress — not because it’s not a cute dress, I just, I hated it.”
Last, but certainly not least (so far), James Pickens Jr. journeyed back to his first day as Richard Webber, giving his now-famous intern speech.
“This was actually the monologue that I had for my audition,” Pickens explained. “And I think of this monologue often. Not only did it introduce my character, but it introduced my genesis along with all of these characters. And to see where we’ve come from, now 23 seasons ago, it’s pretty amazing… I had hair, too!”
