Stephen Colbert has nothing but kind words for his replacement.
After 11 seasons on âThe Late Showâ and an abrupt cancellation from CBS last summer, Colbert is preparing to bid farewell to late night next Thursday. The network has said that the showâs 11:35 p.m. hour will next go to Byron Allenâs comedy talk show, âComics Unleashed.â

In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Colbert reacted to the news that Allen would replace his show with a simple, âGod bless him.â
âI know Byron. We got to know each other last year, actually. Heâs fascinating,â he added, also noting Allenâs history with Johnny Carson, who hosted âThe Tonight Showâ from 1962 to 1992.
âI said, âHey, congrats. I heard you got the time. Good for you,ââ Colbert continued. ââWouldnât it be lovely if you could drop Mr. Carson a note?ââ
Allen caught his big break in 1979, when the then-18-year-old became the youngest comedian ever to perform on âThe Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,â just days before graduating high school.

Since then, Allen has built a media empire through the Allen Media Group, founded in 1993, which has launched multiple 24-hour HD television networks, according to the companyâs website.

Per Variety, Allen had been pursuing the 11:35 p.m. slot that âThe Late Showâ holds ever since CBS announced it would end.
âIf theyâre looking for a show, my hand is already up,â the comedian and businessman said during New Yorkâs Advertising Week event last October. âFifty years, Iâve been waiting for this moment. Definitely, Iâm going for it. ⊠Iâm investing millions and millions of dollars to prove myself at 12:35.â
CBS announced its deal with Allen in April, giving him the full 11:35 p.m. hour to air back-to-back episodes of âComics Unleashedâ Mondays through Fridays. Allen will also continue to own the following hour, as his comedy game show âFunny You Should Askâ shifts its schedule.

âI created and launched âComics Unleashedâ 20 years ago so my fellow comedians could have a platform to do what we all love â make people laugh,â Allen said in a statement at the time. âI truly appreciate CBSâ confidence in me by picking up our two-hour comedy block of âComics Unleashedâ and âFunny You Should Ask,â because the world can never have enough laughter.â
Allen will officially own the âLate Showâ slot once Colbert airs his final broadcast May 21.
Colbert told THR that he still has one dream guest in mind before signing off this month. âThe pope is my white whale,â he said, referring to Pope Leo XIV.
But as far as his late-night legacy is concerned, Colbert just has one goal: to be âremembered as a comedy show.â
Culture: Actor Lauren Weedman Was Diagnosed With Bellâs Palsy. Then, Hollywood Showed Up In The Most Unexpected Way.
âWe harvest laughter for a living, and ultimately thatâs the thing I want more than anything else,â he concluded. âI just want to make the audience laugh.â
