Christopher Knight opened up about the famous episode The Brady Bunch where his character Peter's voice won't stop cracking
Knight called it the 'bleakest week' of his life
The actor, who said he wasn't a good singer, thought the writers were making fun of him, but he has a different perspective watching the episode now
It’s an episode that’s lived in the minds of The Brady Bunch fans for decades, but it’s lived in Christopher Knight’s for very different reasons.
Knight, who starred as middle brother Peter Brady, opened up about his time on the beloved TV series on the Feb. 20 episode of The Morning Mix podcast. The series ran for five seasons, from 1969 to 1974. Knight turned 12 the year the show premiered.
The actor told the hosts that he “sucked it up” when the Bradys had to sing and dance on the show. “To the point where I have a phobia for singing and dancing,” he said, describing himself as having “no talent in that area.”
But over time, he said, Barry Williams, who played eldest son Greg Brady, “wanted to do more” singing and dancing, so more was written into the show. That led to the season three episode “Dough Re Mi,” which premiered in 1972.

In the episode, Greg writes a song for his siblings to sing, but Peter, on the cusp of puberty, can’t get his voice, which keeps cracking, to behave. Knight thought the adult creators of the show were making fun of his lack of musical skills.
“That was the bleakest week of my life,” Knight said of making the episode. “I’m having to crack my voice, because I think they’re making fun of how bad I am at singing. The writers had no idea that I couldn’t sing, they just had Peter have voice cracking. But I’m thinking they’re now pointing out how bad I am at singing.”
Now as an adult, he feels like the episode “works” and “is funny.” He noted, “The fact was, it was a pat on the back giving me that to do.” But in the moment, he thought the writers were being cruel. “At the time I was doing it, I was upside down with embarrassment,” he said.

Back in 2022, Knight did agree to sing again on The Masked Singer with his TV brothers Williams and Mike Lookinland (who played Bobby Brady). Their masked costumes had them dressed as mummies.

He told PEOPLE part of the reason why he did the series was “because I don't sing and the Bradys had been hovering around singing since nearly the beginning.” He explained, “I've always been sort of along for the ride and it hasn't been comfortable, but we're family first and foremost!”
He said that he never had a solo in The Brady Bunch because “that wasn't within my capability.” He said, “In all the chorus stuff, I would just stand back from the mic so my voice wouldn't ruin that tape.”
Asked about the voice-change episode then, he told PEOPLE that it wasn’t a real reflection of his own puberty. “No, my voice didn't change for another four, five years — and it changed more gradually than it was depicted in the show,” he said.
Knight and Williams, 71, also have their own podcast, The Real Brady Bros., where they rewatch the series and discuss their lives. Knight told The Morning Mix that he never really understood why the series has lasted so long until he started watching it for his podcast.
Of the show, he said, “It transcended its original purpose.”
