The Odyssey Star Matt Damon Explains Why He Turned Down The Dark Knight Role

Matt Damon has finally shared why he passed on a role in Christopher Nolan‘sThe Dark Knight. While many actors would have seized the opportunity to join the iconic 2008 Batman film, Damon said he had a different reason for saying no.
On Josh Horowitz’s podcast, Happy Sad Confused, the actor spoke about his decision. He explained that he was forced to pass because he was already headlining another project at the time and chose to prioritize a lead role. The Odyssey star said, “The Dark Knight was a small role that I was offered. It’s a good role in a great movie. There was some other big movie I was doing where I was like, ‘Well, I can’t play Harvey Dent.’”
The role of Harvey Dent ultimately went to Aaron Eckhart, whose turn as Gotham’s “White Knight” and his tragic transformation became a central pillar of the movie.
Damon eventually teamed up with Nolan for The Odyssey. In the film, he stars as Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca. The film follows his dangerous 10-year journey home after the Trojan War. The cast also includes Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus.

The biggest roles Matt Damon passed on during his career
Harvey Dent was not the only major role Damon missed. Another big role he rejected was Jake Sully in James Cameron’s Avatar. Damon chose the Jason Bourne franchise instead, even though Cameron reportedly offered him 10% of the movie’s box office profits.
Avatar went on to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. Damon has since joked that he will “go down in history” as the actor who walked away from the largest single payday in Hollywood history.
Early in his career, Damon also missed out on the role of Aaron Stampler in the 1996 legal thriller Primal Fear, which ultimately launched Edward Norton’s career. Damon later cited that rejection as a big motivation for his career, as losing the part inspired him and Ben Affleck to finish writing Good Will Hunting, which earned them the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
