TASS quoted officials in the region as saying that emergency crews had brought under control flames that had soared 15 metres (50 feet) skywards. Grassy areas had caught fire near the site of one explosion and were still burning, it said.
Russian news agencies said residents ordered evacuated from some 300 homes were now returning.
Kizilyurt's mayor's office said a fire occurred in the industrial zone of the town and was believed to have engulfed a gas distribution station, Interfax reported.
