Key Points -
Uber Technologies reports a larger absolute volume of total revenue, whereas Shopify operates at a smaller overall scale but posts higher percentage gains in its recent year-over-year performance measurements.
Over the last eight quarters, the two companies display steady overall revenue trajectories, with both entities consistently reporting distinct quarter-over-quarter seasonal volume increases during the reporting period ended in December of each calendar year.
Investors should watch whether the absolute gap in total revenue volume between the two companies remains at its current level, or if differing percentage growth rates cause the gap to narrow in upcoming quarterly reporting periods.

Foolish Take
Judging by the data above, you might assume that Uber Technologies is a much larger company than Shopify. But that isn't the case. Uber's market cap of $139 billion is actually slightly smaller than Shopify's $183.7 billion. So why is Uber generating so much more revenue?
It comes down to their business models. Uber has a global reach and makes money every time someone orders a ride or a delivery on its app. It's also able to charge surge pricing during busy service windows. In contrast, Shopify relies on its B2B service, relying on e-commerce business growth and penetration. The customer pool may be more limited here, and Shopify likely doesn't benefit from the same frequency of use as Uber does.

That said, Shopify's revenue is growing much faster -- delivering 63% growth from Q3 2024 to Q2 2026, compared to Uber's 27% growth over the same time period. And its recent partnership with Meta promises to juice returns even more. As agentic AI takes hold in the e-commerce landscape, Shopify could staring at a brand-new catalyst -- one that could either mitigate a recession-related slowdown or help it produce even more impressive returns from here, closing the gap with Uber.
