After 11 seasons of mysteries in a quaint English town, Grantchester came to an end on Sunday, August 2. There won’t be a Grantchester Season 12, but we did get the inside scoop on what would happen next from the makers of Grantchester in our series finale interview. Warning: Grantchester series finale spoilers ahead.

The Grantchester team wanted the show to end as peacefully as the show has been for most of its run, but with some higher stakes thrown in for the last episode. Soon-to-be-promoted Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green) was shot on the job at the end of the penultimate episode, and he seemed close to death in the series finale. Thankfully, he survived. And the series ended with a picnic for the Grantchester friends that became family.

Showrunner Daisy Coulam told TV Insider that the directions written into the finale script dictated what would come next for the characters after the events of the finale: “The river will keep on flowing,” Coulam wrote. “The swans will keep swimming.” Basically, life would go on as it has for the Grantchester gang, only this time with Geordie retired from the police force and the family’s growing with Larry (Bradley Hall) and Jennifer’s (Melissa Johns) daughter, Daisy (named after the showrunner), and Leonard (Al Weaver) and Daniel’s (Oliver Dimsdale) adopted son, Raymond (Jax James).

Coulam said that killing off Geordie would have been “too dark for us.” After it was certain that Geordie would survive and that vicar Alphy’s (Rishi Nair) faith would be restored in the process, Coulam and her writers wanted to create an ending that expressed a continuation of the story.

“We wanted that sense that those characters are somewhere out there still, that life goes on,” Coulam told us. To that end, they added in a detail implying that Geordie and Alphy would continue their investigative partnership, albeit unofficially.

In the final scenes, Alphy told Geordie about a dinosaur skeleton that had gone missing from a college in Cambridge. The police weren’t on the case, so they wondered if they might have a go at it.

“It’s nice to think that these two are still doing things,” Nair told TV Insider. “It feels like if you walk into a pub in 10 years’ time, you might see them having a pint, discussing a crime over it.”
