David Kaczynski helped authorities identify his brother, Ted Kaczynski, as the “Unabomber,” the man who anonymously killed and injured Americans across the country using homemade explosives for 17 years starting in 1978.
Over the course of his bombing spree, Ted killed three people and injured at least 23 more. In 1995, The Washington Post and The New York Times published Ted’s notorious anti-technology manifesto. In it, David recognized phrases reminiscent of his brother’s writing style and contacted investigators about his suspicion that Ted may be the culprit.
In April 1996, Ted was arrested at his Montana cabin where authorities found substantial evidence that linked him to the bombings. He pleaded guilty to all charges related to the bombings and murders in 1998 and was sentenced to life in prison.
David’s role in Ted’s capture led to their estrangement. David sent dozens of letters to Ted while he was in prison for nearly three decades in an effort to reopen their communication, David told The New York Times in April 2025. Ted died by suicide in prison in June 2023.

Who is David Kaczynski?

David is Ted’s younger brother by seven years, per NPR. The siblings grew up in Evergreen Park, Ill., and were raised by first-generation Polish Americans, per The New York Times.
David was an aspiring writer who graduated from Columbia University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
Growing up, the pair were close. “You were the best big brother I could have had when I was small, and beginning to form a sense of myself and the wider world,” David wrote in one of his letters to Ted in prison, per TheNew York Times. “I will always hold memories of your kindness close to my heart.”
While coming of age, David was curious about his brother’s lack of friends. He recalled in a 2009 interview with NPR that his mom believed it was partly due to an instance when Ted was hospitalized at nine months old that he somehow felt abandoned. He said she then told him, “David, don’t ever abandon your brother because that’s what he fears the most.”
Their bond continued into adulthood. David eventually went on to work at a zinc smelter in Montana, where he and Ted purchased the land Ted built his cabin on outside of Lincoln, Mont., according to the outlet. David lived in a different city about 90 miles away.
“Ted led me on hikes, whereas I led Ted in negotiating our social world, as modest as it was,” David told the publication. “Not sure I quite realized at the time just how important I’d become in Ted’s life as his best and only friend.”
David then worked as an English teacher in Iowa before taking time off to work on a novel in Texas and eventually moved to New York to live with Linda Patrik, whom he planned to wed. David’s marriage plans allegedly set Ted off, prompting Ted to cut all communication off with him, David told the outlet.

While David and Ted initially stopped speaking because Ted believed David’s marriage was a big mistake, David explained to TheNew York Times, their division deepened after David and Patrik led authorities to identify Ted as the “Unabomber.”
After the “Unabomber’s” manifesto was published on Sept. 19, 1995, per Britannica, in The Washington Post and The New York Times, David’s wife was the one who encouraged him to read it and brought up Ted as a potential suspect.

“Without Linda, I probably would have shoved it in a drawer and tried my best not to think about it,” he told The New York Times.
Ted was arrested on April 3, 1996, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty to several charges.
“I was just devastated,” David told CBS News in September 2025. “There aren’t gonna be any innocent victims now, but maybe gonna have to go through the rest of my life with my brother’s blood on my hands.”
According to David, he wrote to Ted in prison shortly after. In Ted’s response, which David shared with The New York Times in 2025, he called being imprisoned for life “a fate far worse than death.” He added, “The real reason why you informed on me is that you hate me.”
Ted continued in the letter, “And what you hate me for is your own gnawing sense of inferiority. Your suspicion that I was the Unabomber at last gave you your opportunity to get a crushing revenge on big brother for being smarter and more capable than you are.”
David eventually apologized to Ted, often deposited money into his commissary account and sent him books, David shared. Over nearly three decades, he also kept sending letters reminiscing on their shared memories. Ted rarely replied and refused to put David on his visitors list, per the publication.
David kept trying, especially after he learned, at the end of 2021, that Ted had terminal cancer. “I needed to tell him that I loved him, and to recount the ways in which he’d had a positive influence on my life,” David told the outlet. “But I knew Ted had a very stubborn side, making it highly unlikely I would ever hear from him.”
Where is David Kaczynski now?

David and his wife retired from their jobs at a Buddhist monastery in Woodstock, N.Y. in 2015, per The New York Times. After doing so, they moved to Texas, according to the publication.
According to the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies, David has given several lectures on mental illness over the years. In 2016, David also wrote a memoir titled Every Last Tie: A Memoir of the Unabomber and His Family.
In the months after Ted’s arrest, David and his wife tried to connect with some of Ted’s victims to apologize and help them cope. While most survivors didn’t respond, David told TheNew York Times and CBS News that he connected with one survivor, Gary Wright, who was injured in 1987 when Ted left a bomb outside of his computer store.
“We were both on healing journeys of a sort and we were both looking for a path forward, and we had so much in common,” David told CBS News.
Wright said he had a long time to process what happened to him when David reached out and that he had redefined for himself what forgiveness was. He added, “One family doesn’t have to suffer forever because of the act of one.”
David and Wright have kept in touch over the years. Not long after Ted’s death in 2023, the pair appeared at a Yom Kippur event together in California, where David reportedly said he was grieving his brother’s death, according to TheNew York Times.
“It’s not the same maybe, but I believe in spiritual brotherhood, too,” he also said at the event, per TheNew York Times. “Gary is my brother in spirit.”
