Matthew Lawrence pitched his spinoff idea for Boy Meets Worldâs Jack and Eric to Will Friedle during an appearance on Pod Meetâs World.
Friedle enthusiastically backed the idea, telling his former costar, âIâm totally down.â
Lawrence had previously told EW that he envisioned the spinoff as a new version of The Odd Couple.
It sounds like Boy Meets Worldâs Jack Hunter and Eric Matthews might still have some unfinished business.More than two decades after the beloved TGIF sitcom ended, Will Friedle is officially throwing his support behind a spinoff centered on his character, Eric Matthews, and Matthew Lawrenceâs Jack Hunter. And heâs not just entertaining the idea âheâs ready to make it happen.During a recent episode of the Pod Meets World podcast, Lawrence reunited with his former costars Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Friedle, where the conversation very quickly turned to the possibility of bringing Jack and Eric back together. Lawrence revealed that the question has been coming up frequently during recent interviews about a potential revival.

âEvery publication said, âWhen are we getting a Jack and Eric spinoff?ââ Lawrence recalled being asked during a press junket to promote The Lawrence Brothers Detective Agency, a graphic novel he co-wrote with his brothers, Joey and Andrew Lawrence. The actor admitted he wasnât sure whether the opportunity had passed, but insisted that the concept still had plenty of life left in it. He described the idea of the spinoff as a new version of The Odd Couple, with the two former roommates finding their way back to each other, even suggesting that the show could be filmed as a vertical sitcom.

And Friedle didnât need much convincing.âIâm totally down,â the actor said, enthusiastically entertaining the possibility of making the project happen, even if it meant taking an unconventional route. In fact, Friedle seconded that they wouldnât necessarily need a traditional television network to get the project off the ground. Instead, he floated the possibility of creating a shorter-form series for YouTube.âLetâs do a YouTube show,â he suggested, adding that the group already had the creative resources to make it happen with Fishel and Strong in their corner. âWe got two sitcom directors right here. ... We donât have to even outsource anything.âLawrence was equally enthusiastic, agreeing that the characters could still work together in a modern-day comedy, revisiting The Odd Couple idea, and joking that he would be Jack Lemmonâs Flex and Friedle would be Walter Matthauâs Oscar.Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter. The idea isnât entirely new. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence shared his vision for what the spinoff could look like today: A modern day The Odd Couple with Jack and Eric, now in their 40s, having gone their separate ways, hit some rough patches, and are forced to rely on each other again.Lawrence also suggested to EW that a spinoff of the two characters had been in talks until it fell apart amid a breakdown in the relationship between Disney and Boy Meets World creator Michael Jacobs, saying, âThat was really supposed to happen. But that was the start of Disney and Michael Jacobs feud.âAs for now, thereâs no official spinoff in development, but Friedleâs willingness to explore even a YouTube version is certainly encouraging news for fans of the show who have been waiting to see the two characters reunite. And if Lawrence and Friedle have their way, Jack and Eric might just get another shot at being roommates. You can listen to Lawrence on Pod Meets World below.
