Kyler Murray has been under scrutiny for several years because of his high-variance play and a history of injuries that have repeatedly forced him to miss time.
Now entering his eighth season, Murray must clean up those issues and prove he is worth the first overall pick the Cardinals used on him in 2019. If he cannot, former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho believes Murray’s time in the league could be in jeopardy.
Kyler Murray Has One Last Chance to Revive His NFL Career
Murray beat out former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy in training camp for the starting job in Minnesota, setting the stage for what was supposed to be a revenge tour similar to Sam Darnold’s. But that is not how things have unfolded so far.
Murray has played in only one game for the Vikings, completing 3 of 5 passes for 18 yards and an interception before leaving with a concussion.
Now back from the injury and set to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday, Acho believes Murray needs to make the most of his opportunity to keep his career on track.
“Kyler, if you struggle, we’re benching you. Baker [Mayfield], respectfully, if you struggle, you can struggle. But Kyler, if you struggle, not only are we benching you, you might not play football again,” Acho said on the “Speakeasy” podcast.
“Kyler, the last time we saw you, it was 2nd and 11, second play of the game, and you were throwing an interception. You do not have the luxury of struggling.”
Acho stressed that Murray will not receive the same leeway if he struggles like Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield.

“You have no quality currency with the Minnesota Vikings; you have no quality currency with Kevin O’Connell; you have minimal quality currency in the National Football League. At least Baker Mayfield has made deposits into the Bucs.”
Acho was referring to Mayfield’s track record with the Buccaneers. Despite his recent struggles, Mayfield has already established himself with the team and earned its trust, which led to his lucrative contract extension.

“If you think about what Baker Mayfield has done in Tampa, you have some good memories. There are no memories of Kyler Murray except for a pick off his back foot on second-and-eleven when he saw pressure,” Acho continued.

Mayfield has led the Buccaneers to the playoffs twice and has thrown for more than 4,000 yards in two seasons.
Sunday gives Murray an opportunity to prove the talent that made him the No. 1 overall pick is still there. He has a chance to show that he still has something left in the tank.
His stint in Arizona was inconsistent. There were some good moments, including winning Offensive Rookie of the Year and making the playoffs once, but there was little team success beyond that postseason appearance.
Murray’s PFN NFL QB Impact Scores reflect that mediocrity under center, with his best season coming in 2021 with an 80.1 grade and his injury-shortened 2025 season ending with a 75.3 score.
Eventually, that led to a change of scenery as the Cardinals brought in a new head coach and moved in a different direction.
Minnesota, meanwhile, gives Murray a strong opportunity to revive his career.
He has Kevin O’Connell running the offense, Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison at receiver, T.J. Hockenson at tight end, and a defense capable of suffocating the best offenses in the league. The supporting cast and coaching environment give Murray a chance to succeed.
At this point, the excuses are running out. The time is now.
Murray is on a one-year, prove-it deal with the Vikings and has a chance to become O’Connell’s next revival project. If things do not work out, though, his future in the NFL could become increasingly uncertain.
